Founded in Japan in the late 1960s by Ogawa Shinsuke, Ogawa Pro is a fundamental reference in collective documentary practice in the postwar period. Its work spans student protests, participation in the popular struggle against the construction of Narita Airport, and later, life in the village of Magino, incorporating radical forms of collaboration and of cinema as a social experience.

Undercurrents, counterspells
What can cinema still do when the ubiquitous image has lost its capacity to disturb? What can be done when the bond between image and action appears to have been severed? Doc’s Kingdom 2026 takes these questions as its starting point for a wider reflection on the conditions under which images are made, circulated and received in times of accelerated dispossession and genocidal brutality.
And so the program draws on the work of filmmakers engaged with revolutionary imagination and the historic images that were once thought to carry it, and the collective and common forms that were never any single person or entity’s property, holding the opacity of the image as a political claim. Together, their films conjure five centuries of Mesoamerican resistance to colonial violence, the Palestinian liberation movement, and the aftermath of utopian experiments in ex-Yugoslavia, postwar Lebanon and rural Portugal. What connects them is less a theme than shared undercurrents: the refusal of thinking the image as just an evidentiary document; the embrace of memory through the work of collective disorientation; and the creation of visual and sonic trances capable of reactivating a sensibility numbed by algorithmic spells.
These works resist translation into the dominant audiovisual grammar, and ask of their viewers something the current image economy actively discourages: to wager counterspells that can jolt our bodies into movements.

Abderrahmane Sissako is a Mauritian-born film director and producer known for films which explore globalization and displacement. He studied cinema at the Federal State Film Institute in Moscow and in the 1990s settled in France. His first feature-length film, Waiting for Happiness (2002) won a FIPRESCI Prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. His features Bamako (2006) and Timbuktu (2014) were widely acclaimed, with the latter selected to compete for the Palme d’Or and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Alison O’Daniel
Alison O’Daniel is a visual artist and filmmaker working across sound, moving image, sculpture, installation and performance, whose work is generated from a deep engagement with sonority, acoustics, access, and complex embodiment. Informed by her experiences of being d/Deaf/hard of hearing and collaborations with others on the d/Deaf spectrum – including composers, athletes, musicians, and actors – Alison builds a visual, aural, and haptic vocabulary that reveals a politics of sound that exceeds the auditory. Her latest, multi-awarded film The Tuba Thieves (2023), uses real-life tuba thefts in Los Angeles as a springboard to critically explore how the history of sound segregations is deeply embedded into urban spaces through the design and mediation of sound, how sound travels through these substrates and who is allowed or obligated to hear it. She is an Assistant Professor of Film at California College of the Arts in San Francisco.

Born in 1978 in São João da Madeira, he studied mathematics and worked in photography and theatre before starting his career as a director. From 2001 until 2008, he collaborated with the Luso-Brazilian Film Festival of Santa Maria da Feira as a curator. He founded the independent photography and cinema laboratory Átomo 47. He was also the founder of the production company Bando À Parte. His directorial debut, the short film Arca d'Água (2009), was shown at various international festivals and won several awards. In 2010, he was selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus. casa (2010), his second short film, was shown at Indie Lisboa and the Santa Maria da Feira Luso-Brazilian Film Festival. Cativeiro (2012), his first feature-length documentary, was honoured at DocLisboa and also received the DocAlliance award. O Coveiro (2013), his third short film, was awarded the Mèlies d'Argent prize. How I Fell in Love with Eva Ras (2016), her first feature-length fiction film, premiered at Fid Marseille, where it received a Special Jury Mention in the International Competition, and was shown at numerous festivals, including Viennale, Mar del Plata, Rotterdam, Jeonju and the First Look festival at the Museum of the Moving Image in New York. In 2017, his short film Num Globo de Neve won an award at the Indie Lisboa festival. His most recent film, Árvore (2018), had its world premiere at the 68th Berlinale, in the Forum section.

Ben Rivers studied Fine Art at Falmouth School of Art, initially interested in sculpture and only later in photography and analogue super8 film. After finishing his degree, he continued his studies self-taught, learning to shoot on 16mm film and developing by hand. His work as a filmmaker straddles the line between documentary and fiction. In many cases, he follows and films people who have somehow separated from society, using this raw material to create oblique narratives and imagine alternative existences in parallel worlds. His work has been recognised with several awards including the FIPRESCI international critics’ prize at the 68th Venice Film Festival for his first feature Two Years at Sea; the inaugural Robert Gardner prize in 2012; the Baloise art prize at Art Basel 42 in 2011; twice being nominated for the Jarman Award in 2010 and 2012; and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation prize for artists in 2010. His most recent exhibitions include: Slow Action, Hepworth Wakefield, 2012; Sack Barrow, Hayward Gallery, London, 2011; Slow Action, Matt’s Gallery, London and Gallery TPW, Toronto, 2011; A World Rattled of Habit, A Foundation, Liverpool, 2009. Retrospectives of his work have been included in the programmes of festivals such as Courtisane, Pesaro International Film Festival, London Film Festival, Tirana Film Festival, Punto de Vista, IndieLisboa and Milan Film Festival. In 1996 he co-founded the Brighton Cinematheque, where he was also co-programmer until its closure in 2006. He continues to programme erratically.

Ben Russell
Ben Russell (1976, USA) is an itinerant artist and curator whose films, installations and performances promote a deep engagement with the history and semiotics of the moving image. His formal investigations of the historical and conceptual relationships between the beginnings of cinema, visual anthropology and structuralist cinema result in immersive experiences that are simultaneously interested in ritual, ordinary spectatorship and the search for a ‘psychedelic ethnography’. Russell has shown his films and presented exhibitions of his work at the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Rotterdam Film Festival, the Wexner Centre for the Arts, the Viennale and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2008 and a FIPRESCI prize in 2010 for his feature Let Each One Go Where He May. Ben has also worked on the Magic Lantern projection series in Providence, Rhode Island, was co-director of the artist-run BEN RUSSELL space in Chicago, toured the world with film/video/performance programmes, and was part of a two-drums music trio called Beast.

Carlos Barroco and Margarida Cardoso
Artist and gallery owner Carlos Barroco was born in Lisbon in 1946. Barroco attended the António Arroio School of Arts in the capital and began exhibiting his paintings in 1974. In the 1980s, he founded the Novo Século Gallery in Lisbon, where he launched emerging artists. In addition to painting, he also worked in installation, performance and multimedia, and had several international exhibitions. He passed away in 2015.
Margarida Cardoso was born in Tomar, Portugal. She studied Image and Audiovisual Communication at the António Arroio School of Arts in Lisbon. From 1982 to 1995 she worked in Portugal and France as an assistant director, annotator and scene photographer. In 1995, she began writing and directing her own films, exploring subjects that intersect her personal history with prominent issues in Portugal’s recent history, such as the colonial war in Africa, the revolution and the end of the colonial era.

Portuguese director and anthropologist. Born in Porto, she studied Social Anthropology, did her Masters in Visual Anthropology at the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology at the University of Manchester and her PhD at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa with the thesis Camponeses do Cinema. Between 1994 and 2000 she worked at the National Museum of Ethnology. She is an Assistant Professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa and Coordinator of the Master’s Degree in Anthropology – Visual Cultures. She also teaches on the Masters and PhD programs at the University of São Paulo and the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Barcelona. Daniel Mann (b. 1983) was born in the USA and attended Tel Aviv University Film School. He is currently completing his doctoral thesis at Goldsmiths - University of London on images of war and the integration of audiovisuals in armed conflicts. With a deep understanding of reality and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Mann's films and writings seek to redefine the politics of images through an entanglement of representations, users, media practices and data automation operations. Investigating the notion of habitus, both visually and conceptually, his work revolves around the deployment and incorporation of communication technologies in conflict zones. The images produced by everyday practices and their political (re)appropriation is at the heart of his overall investigation. Mann has made films in collaboration with Sasha Litvintseva, Sirah Foighel Brutmann and Eitan Efrat. He also collaborated with the Forensic Architecture group on the investigation into the murder of Yaqub al-Qi'an in Umm el-Hiran (Israel), 2017.

David MacDougall
David MacDougall (whose work was largely co-directed with his wife Judith) is one of the biggest names in the practice and theory of ‘ethnographic film’ and ‘visual anthropology’ over the last few decades. Born and educated in the USA, the MacDougalls settled in Australia in 1975. From the end of the 1960s to the end of the 1980s, their oeuvre essentially includes works made with semi-nomadic African peoples - such as the Jie of Uganda or the Turkana of Kenya - and with Australian Aborigines. From then on, he turned his attention to India, where he co-directed a film about the photographers of a tourist site (in 1988/1991) and where, as a ‘solo’ artist, David went on to focus extensively on the daily life of a famous boys' boarding school (the Doon School, where he made five films, presented from 2000 to 2004). In between, and also ‘solo’, he also wrote a piece about a small community of shepherds in Sardinia. In its field of departure - and, one might say, against the very limits of the term ‘visual anthropology’ - this is a decisive work in terms of the inclusion of words, and just as an example we can recall his innovations in the recording of indigenous verbal expression, in which the usual translations or overlapping synthesisations were eradicated in favour of subtitling. David MacDougall has written extensively as an essayist and is the author of two reference books (‘Transcultural Cinema’ and ‘The Corporeal Image: Film, Ethnography and the Senses’).

He has worked alongside Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel at the Sensory Ethnography Lab at Harvard, and has collaborated with artists and filmmakers such as Anocha Suwichakornpong, J.P. Sniadecki, Luke Fowler, Ben Rivers, and Helen Mirra. As an improviser he has played and recorded with Fred Lonberg-Holm, Tim Daisy, Liz Payne and Aram Shelton among others, and with Kyle Bruckmann he forms the group EKG. Lately he works around the practice of actuality/location recording (or ‘fields [plural] recording’) and composing with those recordings, with recent projects also taking up archival location recordings. He has taught audio recording and composition through the Sensory Ethnography Lab, the Center for Experimental Ethnography at Penn, and the Department of Film & Media at UC Berkeley. He is currently an affiliate of the Center for Ethnographic Media Arts at the University of Southern California.

After attending the London School of Film Technique on a scholarship from the Fundo do Cinema Nacional, Fernando Matos Silva taught at the Army Film Course and directed for the military between 1969 and 1970. His feature film ‘O Mal Amado’ was the last Portuguese film to be censored by the Estado Novo and the first to be released after the end of the dictatorship. This symbolic charge, which seems to be foreshadowed by the film itself, subtly accompanies the others. As well as directing, he has been involved as a screenwriter, producer and editor in various national productions, collaborating with directors such as Fernando Lopes and Paulo Rocha.

Forensic Architecture
Forensic Architecture (FA) is an interdisciplinary research group based at the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths College - University of London. Founded and directed by architect Eyal Weizman in 2010, the FA team includes architects, academics, artists, filmmakers, software developers, investigative journalists, archaeologists, lawyers and scientists. Together with different partner organisations, FA investigates the actions taken by states and companies, offering its analyses to civil society organisations, NGOs, activist groups and prosecutors, who have presented them in various legal and political forums. The group uses advanced architectural and media techniques to investigate armed conflicts and environmental destruction, as well as to cross-reference a variety of evidence, such as new media, remote sensing, material analysis and witness testimonies. Investigations can take different forms, such as evidence archives, models, drawings, maps, interactive online cartographies, films and animations. The aim is to bring new material and aesthetic sensibilities to bear on the legal and political implications of state violence, armed conflict and climate change. Rather than limiting themselves to presentation in the legal domain, they seek to act in a multiplicity of forums, political and legal, institutional and informal. In recent years, as well as generating a great deal of debate in the area of human rights, architecture and law, the FA has also participated with exhibitions in important cultural and artistic institutions. In 2018, they were shortlisted for the Turner Prize.

Fukuda Katsuhiko
Former member of Ogawa Productions, Japanese director and writer Fukuda Katsuhiko (1943-1998) lived and worked in the rural Sanrizuka area, where he documented the fight against the construction of Narita airport, along with individual stories and tales of community life.
After graduating from the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences at Waseda University, Fukuda joined Ogawa Productions during the filming of The Japanese Liberation Front: Summer in Sanrizuka (1968). Fukuda participated in the series of seven films the collective made between 1968 and 1978, dedicated to the resistance struggle of peasants and their allies against the construction of Narita International Airport in rural Sanrizuka. His first film as a director was a remarkable portrait of the collective at work called Filmmaking and the Way to the Village (1973). Fukuda left the group the same year and remained in Sanrizuka, where he continued to work on a series of 8 mm “film notebooks”, chronicling the ongoing struggle against the airport and village life.

Hannah Meszaros Martin
Hannah Meszaros Martin is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths - University of London and a member of Forensic Architecture. For the past five years she has conducted a practice-led research project on the effects of the legally sanctioned eradication of the coca plant, through aerial fumigation with the herbicide glyphosate, in the context of the Colombian armed conflict and the US-led war on drugs. Her research involves documenting the political-legal transformation that banished non-human life, and analysing new methods of imaging and data production and their role in eradication policies.

Hiroatsu Suzuki and Rossana Torres
Hiroatsu Suzuku is a self-taught filmmaker and visual artist. From an early age, he regularly visited the Kyoto Museum and attended the local film club, where he saw many classic Japanese and international films. After some experience in independent film productions, he moved to Okinawa, where he became interested in rural landscape photography. He travelled to Europe to develop his visual and artistic practice through photography and film watching. After seeing some Portuguese films, he decided to come to Portugal and discover more about Portuguese cinema. He met Rossana Torres and began shooting in the Mértola region, co-directing her first film, Cordão Verde, which was screened in Locarno, Toronto and at Viennale, among other festivals. Rossana Torres was born in Romania while her parents were in political exile. She returned to Portugal as a child to live with her grandparents near Tondela, and later moved to Lisbon to study visual arts and cinema. For a few years, he worked in editing with various Portuguese filmmakers. In 1994, he moved to Mértola, where he teaches photography and video and leads film and animation workshops for children and young people. In recent years, he has collaborated with the Os Filhos de Lumière association in the development and implementation of artistic education programmes through cinema. He founded the Entre Imagem association for film production and cultural and educational projects. He co-directed three films with Hiroatsu Suzuki. Terra won the Best Portuguese Film Award at Doclisboa'18.

Ian Soroka
Ian Soroka (born 1987) works on non-fiction formats in film and video. He studied film and philosophy at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and in Prague at FAMU, and did an MA in Art, Culture and Technology at MIT. Ian is a recipient of the MacDowell Colony scholarship, the Princess Grace Foundation-USA award and a Fulbright scholar in Slovenia, where he was a guest researcher at the Slovenian National Film Archive and the Cinematheque. His work has been shown internationally at festivals, galleries and museums, including: DocLisboa, Art of The Real, Dok.Fest München, BelDocs, Rencontres Internationales and Kinoteka, Ljubljana. Ian is from western Colorado and lives in the San Francisco Bay area.

James Benning
His early films fused "structuralist" investigations into sound-image relationships by filmmakers such as Michael Snow and Hollis Frampton, with an interest in narrative and a deep sensitivity to colour, light and landscape. He captured the attention of the avant-garde cinema world with 8 1/2 x 11 and 11 x 14. Shot in vivid colours in the rural and urban landscapes of his native Midwest, these two films would establish the core of his future formal investigations. His films' rigorous structures - usually based on numerical systems - and exquisitely composed shots reflect his training as a mathematician, and the often autobiographical themes uncover his working-class roots (a rare subject for avant-garde films) and his long-standing commitment to political activism. While his early films were mainly concerned with form and narrative, from the 1980s onwards his work began to feature personal themes and documentary elements, and to increasingly involve themes of history, memory and death. American Dreams, Landscape Suicide and Used Innocence provide glimpses into the minds of violent criminals through their own words, and are made all the more terrifying by Benning's decision to place the crimes in their historical and political contexts rather than passing judgement on them. French filmmaker born in Paris, 1950. Influenced by Jan Vermeer, Yasujiro Ozu and Robert Bresson. Initially supported by Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, his first films were made in Super 8. Contrary to what was usual with this technique, Rousseau’s shots are long and fixed. He kept this form in his filmography, even though he later embraced digital video. His short films predominantly deal with nothing less than cinema itself: space, time and movement.

Jean-Jacques Andrien
After completing his film studies at INSAS in Brussels, Jean-Jacques Andrien directed several short films, some of which were screened at the Cannes Film Festival. His first feature film, Le fils d'Amr est mort!, won the Locarno Grand Prix in 1975. His second film, Le grand paysage d'Alexis Droeven (1981), a dramatic and poetic film with Nicole Garcia and Jerzy Radziwilowicz in the lead roles, portrays a young farmer at a crossroads. Jean-Jacques Andrien returns to the same questions thirty years later in his documentary Il a plu sur le grand paysage (2012). He also directed Mémoires, in 1984, and Australia, starring Fanny Ardant and Jeremy Irons, in 1988. Since then, he has been working on a project in which he is preparing to return to Australia to film Le Silence d'Alexandre with the Aboriginal community of the Tanami desert. Jean-Jacques Andrien's cinema is built on long periods of immersion in the places where he wants to film.

João Mário Grilo
Born in Figueira da Foz in 1958, he has a degree in Sociology and a PhD in Communication Sciences. He is a Full Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He has published articles on criticism, history and theory of cinema and the image. He was the author of the chronicle Imagens in Visão magazine. His first feature film, A Estrangeira (1983), was awarded the Georges Sadoul Prize at the Venice Film Festival.

João Nisa
João Nisa was born in Lisbon in 1971. He studied film at the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema and a BA and MA in Communication Sciences at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. João has dedicated himself to researching the relationship between cinema and contemporary art, and has written essays for various national and international publications. For several years he taught subjects related to the history of cinema and video and experimental cinema at the School of Arts and Design (Caldas da Rainha). In 2006 he set up João Nisa Produções to develop his projects. He directed the film Nocturno (2007), which was shown at various festivals and programmes, such as Cinéma du réel (‘Exploring Documentary’ section) or DocLisboa (‘Riscos e Ensaios’). He is currently making a film based on the novel L’Image by Jean de Berg (Catherine Robbe-Grillet).

João Pedro Rodrigues
João Pedro Rodrigues is a filmmaker and artist who lives in Lisbon, Portugal. He interrupted his studies in ornithology to attend the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in Lisbon, where he graduated in 1989, before going on to work as an assistant director and editor. His work explores sexuality and human desire in all its forms, reflecting the multifaceted history of cinema, from classic genres to documentary and experimental cinema. In addition to several short films, he has written and directed five feature films, including The Ghost, which premiered in the Official Competition at the Venice Film Festival in 2000, causing a national stir in Italy when the Vatican's official newspaper called for the festival director's resignation for choosing the film. He has also co-directed several short films and the feature film The Last Time I Saw Macao (2012) with his artistic collaborator and long-time partner, João Rui Guerra da Mata. His most recent film, The Ornithologist, won the Silver Leopard for Best Director at the Locarno Film Festival in 2016.

He was born in Mozambique in 1962, in the province of Mocuba (Zambézia). He was a Physical Education teacher in the city of Quelimane, where he grew up and lived until 1987. He is a cinematographer and film director. In 1979 he was invited to work at the INC – National Film Institute in Maputo. He gave up his teaching career to devote himself to cinema. At INC he worked in distribution, exhibition, film archiving and production, becoming Production Coordinator in 1990, when he left INC to study film in Cuba, specialising in film and television directing. He also studied production at the International Film and Television School – EICTC.

Degree in Graphic Design from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. From 1999 to 2012, he was a member of the Circolando company and with them he travelled three continents with the shows Caixa Insólita, Giroflé, Cavaterra, Charanga, Quarto Interior and Mansarda. In 2006 he directed Pé na Terra, which won him the prize for best Portuguese short film director at the 3rd Indie Lisboa. In 2007, he made the documentary Jardim. It premiered at Doc Lisboa 2008 and played at international festivals such as FID Marseille and Mar de Plata. In 2008, he gave an intensive one-month training course in documentary filmmaking on the island of São Miguel, together with Frederico Lobo and Tiago Hespanha. With choreographer Madalena Victorino, he collaborates as creator/interpreter in the shows Vale e Flecha. In 2013, he finished his second feature film, Lacrau, which premiered at the 10th Indie Lisboa and won the awards for Best Portuguese Feature Film and Árvore da Vida (Tree of Life), and went on to play at various international festivals. He is currently editing a documentary about the creation of Madalena Victorino's show A Lã e a Neve.

Joaquim Pinto was born in 1957. After graduating from the Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema in the area of sound, he was responsible for the sound on numerous feature films with directors such as Manoel de Oliveira, Raul Ruiz and Werner Schroeter. In 1986, he directed and produced his first feature film, Uma Pedra no Bolso, beginning a production cycle that began with Recordações da Casa Amarela and ended with A Comédia de Deus, both by João César Monteiro. He is married to Nuno Leonel. Together they have made several documentaries and animated films, and coordinate a book and music publishing company.

Jodie Mack
Jodie Mack is an experimental animation director with a master's degree in film, video and new media from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, completed in 2007. Combining the techniques and formal structures of abstract/absolute animation with those of classic film genres, her handmade films use collage to explore the relationship between graphic cinema and narrative, the tension between form and meaning. Musical documentary or stroboscopic archive: his films study domestic and recycled materials to reveal the shared elements between the abstraction of fine art and the mass production of graphic design. His works release the kinetic energy of forgotten and wasted objects and question the role of decoration in everyday life. Mack's 16mm films have been screened at a variety of venues, including the Ann Arbor Film Festival, the Edinburgh International Film Festival, the Images Festival, the Projections section at the New York Film Festival and the Viennale. He has presented solo programmes at the 25FPS Festival, the Anthology Film Archives, the BFI London Film Festival, the Harvard Film Archive, the National Gallery of Art, REDCAT, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the Shenzhen Independent Animation Biennale and the Wexner Center for the Arts, among others. Her work has been featured in publications such as Artforum, Cinema Scope, the New York Times and Senses of Cinema. She is an associate professor of animation at Dartmouth College and a 2018/2019 fellow at Harvard University's Centre for Cinema Studies.

Johann Lurf
Johann Lurf is an artist and filmmaker who uses the moving image to analyse and re-structure space and cinema. His practice includes observational and documentary films, above all in the field of structuralist cinema, in an approach to the archive image guided by the filmic language itself. Born in 1982 in Vienna, Johann Lurf studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and did an Erasmus semester at the Slade School of Art in London in 2008. He graduated from Harun Farocki's film class in 2009. She received the Austrian State Scholarship for Video and Media Art and participated in the Artist-in-Residence programmes at the MAK Center for Arts and Architecture in Los Angeles 2011, SAIC Chicago 2015, and in Tokyo and Rotterdam 2016, as well as in Israel in 2019. In the same year, he received the Berlin scholarship from the Akademie of Arts Berlin. His work has been recognised with awards and shown at numerous exhibitions, film libraries and festivals.

José Filipe Costa (1970) has a PhD from the Royal College of Art, London. He has written and directed several short films: “A Rua” (2008), “Chapa 23” (2006), “Domingo” (2005) and “Undo” (2004), and the documentaries “Linha Vermelha” (2011), “Entre Muros” (2002) and “Senhorinha” (2001), which have been shown at international film festivals. He was the screenwriter and director of the science series “Histórias da Vida na Terra” (Stories of Life on Earth) (2008). José Luis Guerín
One of the most respected figures in Spanish cinema, José Luis Guerín was born in Barcelona in 1960. He began his career with experimental short films during his youth and made the leap to feature-length films in 1984 with Los motivos de Berta, which won an award at the Berlinale Forum. In 1990, he directed Innisfree, which took him to the Irish town to explore the echoes of Ford’s legendary cinematic work in the lives of its residents. This was followed in 1997 by Comboio de Sombras, an archaeological re-examination of Gérard Fleury’s amateur footage. In 2001, he completed En construcción, an immersion in the El Raval neighbourhood of Barcelona during its urban regeneration process, which became his most critically acclaimed project. At the 2007 Venice Film Festival, he presented Dans la ville de Sylvia, a fable about desire and the process of artistic creation. With Jonas Mekas, he made the documentary Correspondencia Jonas Mekas – J.L. Guerín (2011), and among his most recent works, A Academia das Musas (2015) stands out, always testing, with immense sensitivity, the boundaries between fiction and documentary. His latest film, Historias del buen valle, was awarded at the 2025 San Sebastián Film Festival.

Jumana Manna
Jumana Manna (1987) is a Palestinian artist currently living in Berlin. Working mainly with sculpture and cinema, the artist explores relationships where manifestations of power are articulated. Her films weave together fact and fiction, biographical and archive material, to investigate national and historical narratives. Borders, distance and proximity are equally important themes in Manna's work - as a Palestinian born in the United States, raised in Jerusalem and with an academic background in Oslo and Los Angeles, the artist brings her experience of displacement and not belonging to her work. In recent projects Manna investigates how mechanisms of economic, political and interpersonal power condition architectural spaces, as well as human and plant life. Manna has a particular interest in the erasures that accompany various modern scientific practices of preservation; his projects challenge the binary constructions of a pure, unchanging heritage on the one hand, and the acceptance of innovation on the other.

Kidlat Tahimik
A sui generis blend of documentary, diary film, fictionalised autobiography, film essay and ethnography, Kidlat Tahimik's 1977 debut, Perfumed Nightmare, became an instant classic, heralding the arrival of a pioneering filmmaker. Tahimik is nevertheless an unusual pioneer. His cinema's sharp critique of the divisions between rich and poor, capitalism and community, developed nations and the developing world, uses gentle humour, drawing on everyday experiences and children's play. Weaving this material into wise and candid looks at life in the Philippines, Tahimik reveals how its post-colonial status places the country at the centre of contemporary concerns about the recession of tradition in the face of a global market dominated by an agglutinating market and ever-growing technology. There are few clues in Tahimik's early life to indicate the career he would choose. He was born Eric de Guia in Baguio in 1942, the son of an engineer and a woman who would become the first female mayor in the Philippines. After completing his master's degree at Wharton Business School, he worked for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris in 1968. Uninspired by the research he was asked to do there, he left his job to sell tourist souvenirs at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. Then, instead of returning home, he joined a community of artists in Munich and eventually caught the attention of Werner Herzog, who cast him in a small role in the film The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (1974). Under Herzog's tutelage, he began making films and premiered Perfumed Nightmare at the 1977 Berlin Film Festival. The film travelled quickly around the world, promoted in the United States by Francis Ford Coppola and Susan Sontag. Since then, Tahimik has made a series of documentaries and a feature-length fiction film, always demonstrating his love of wordplay, with both humour and sophistication, and his ability to mix politics and imagination in surprising and revealing ways.

An important German documentary filmmaker born in 1930. Wildenhahn was one of the greatest figures in European direct cinema, which he embraced under the influence of Richard Leacock. He worked for public television NDR and dedicated part of his documentary work to musical and choreographic creation, with works focusing on John Cage, Jimmie Smith or Merce Cunningham and Pina Bausch. He was also a documentary film theorist. He passed away in 2018.

Laura Huertas Millán is a French-Colombian artist and filmmaker. A graduate of Beaux-Arts de Paris and Le Fresnoy, she holds a PhD in visual arts with a project developed between PSL University (SACRe programme) and the Sensory Ethnography Lab (Harvard University). Her films Journey To A Land Otherwise Known (2012) and Aequador (2011) were part of a series on exoticism, where political history, ecology and science fiction intertwine. These works have been exhibited mainly at events and art spaces (Guggenheim NY, Videobrasil, Bienal de la Imagen en Movimiento, Centre Pompidou, Palais de Tokyo, FRONT Triennial...). In 2012, he began a series on ‘ethnographic fictions’, hyphenated forms between visual anthropology and experimental documentary. Sol Negro (2016), La Libertad (2016), Jeny303 (2018) and The Labyrinth (2018) are the main works in this series. Awarded prizes at the Locarno Film Festival, FIDMarseille, Doclisboa, the Fronteira Film Festival and MIDBO (Colombia), these films were also part of the official selections at the Toronto Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, Cinéma du Réel, Torino, FICUNAM, La Habana, among others. His work has been presented in special programmes at the TIFF Lightbox, the Flaherty Seminar, the ICA in London and the SAIC in Chicago.

She is a founding partner of the production company Terratreme Filmes. With Pedro Pinho, she organised the Nomadlab film laboratory in Maputo, in partnership with Dockanema. She is responsible for the video lab II at Ar.Co. She recently completed an artistic residency at Casa da Imagem in Gaia. She currently works as a director, editor and producer. She has directed several documentary films, including Retratos (Gulbenkian Immigration Forum) and As cidades e as trocas (co-directed by Pedro Pinho), as well as documentary television series such as No trilhos dos Naturalistas: São Tomé e Príncipe (co-directed by Tiago Hespanha) and Um dia no Museu (13-episode series for RTP2, CRIM). She works regularly as an editor, most notably on the films Bab Sebta by Frederico Lobo and Pedro Pinho, retrato de inverno de uma paisagem ardida by Inês Sapeta, Visita Guiada by Tiago Hespanha, Lacrau by João Vladimiro and Um fim do mundo by Pedro Pinho.

Maria Augusta Ramos
Maria Augusta Ramos was born after the military coup in Brazil in 1964. Since her first documentary, Ramos has systematically tried to portray and scrutinise Brazilian institutions, namely the country's judicial and penal system - including its courts, police forces and detention houses. Working within an observational and non-interventionist film tradition, Ramos refuses interviews, narration or other editorial contributions. On the fringes of a certain tendency in Brazilian cinema to explore and spectacularise issues related to urban violence and crime, Ramos takes an interior approach, pursuing what he calls the ‘Theatre of Justice’. In doing so, the spatial similarity between courts and stages is not ignored by the film-maker, nor are the performative aspects of judges and prosecutors. Her preference for internal spaces - although not a rule - may also be related to the importance that the filmmaker - a former student of musicology and electroacoustic music - attaches to formal composition.

Matilde Meireles is a sound artist and researcher who makes use of field recordings to compose site-oriented projects. Her work has a multi-sensorial, durational and multi-perspective critical approach to site, where Matilde investigates the potential of listening across spectrums and scales as ways to attune to various ecosystems and articulate plural experiences of the world. Some examples include the inner architectures of reeds and complex water ecologies, resonances in everyday objects, local neighbourhoods and the architecture of radio signals. Her upcoming new album on the Crónica label, entitled Loop. And Again. (2024), delves into the dynamics of magnetic fields, intricate wiring arrangements, and their interconnectedness with the shifts in the surrounding landscape. Her work is also presented regularly in the form of performances, installations, community-based projects and publications. She holds a PhD in Sonic Arts from SARC: Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Sound and Music, Queen’s University Belfast.

Mohanad Yaqubi is a filmmaker, producer and one of the founders of the Ramallah-based production company Idioms Film. Yaqubi is also one of the founders of the research and curatorial collective Subversive Films, which focuses on militant film practices, and more recently he is a researcher at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent, Belgium. As a producer, Yaqubi's filmography includes the documentary Infiltrators (Khaled Jarrar, 2013), Suspended Time (various directors, 2013) and the short narrative Pink Bullet (Ramzi Hazboun, 2014), several co-productions, including the feature film Habibi (dir. Susan Youssef, 2010), the short film Though I Know the River is Dry (dir. Omar R. Hamilton, 2012), and the documentaries Ambulance (dir. Mohammed Jabaly, 2016) and Ouroboros (dir . Basma Sharif, 2017). Nicolás Pereda
Nicolás Pereda (1982) was born in Mexico and currently lives between Mexico City, Toronto and New York. In his meticulous, minimalist and carefully formalist cinematography, which often uses long shots, Pereda interweaves elements of narrative and documentary cinema. Predominantly shot in his native country, his films investigate the structure of Mexican social classes through family dynamics and friendship relationships. A sense of community permeates all his films, as the artist often works with the same group of performers, mainly Gabino Rodrigues and Teresa Sánches, who appear, film after film, using their own names but in an ever-changing configuration of relationships. The recurring presence of the same performers, as well as the repetition of themes and social environment, set up a cinematographic game of repetition and variation that seems to link all his films. Pereda is also a professor at the State University of New Jersey. In the last 10 years, he has directed more than ten feature films; his film Summer of Goliath was awarded the Orizzonti prize at the Venice Film Festival. Pereda has also directed films in collaboration with Andrea Bussman and Jacob Secher Schulsinger.

Born in 1951 and having worked as an assistant director alongside directors such as Alain Tanner and Claude Goretta, he made his debut behind the camera in 1978 “LA VOIX DE SON MAÎTRE”, co-directed with Gérard Mordillat, a documentary in which he interviewed the bosses of the main French industrial groups. After signing a series of works on mountaineering for television, he dedicated the rest of his work to cinema, authoring an oeuvre characterized by the noblest observational tradition of direct cinema and its reinvention with a highly personalized and inventive gaze. The cultural association Os Filhos de Lumière, created in 2000, was born out of a desire to help young people discover cinema, intervening in a sector of cultural and educational life where little has been invested. The workshop, held in Vila Nova de São Bento in partnership with Serpa Town Council and presented here, is the first in a series of workshops to be held in partnership with the O Lírio Roxo Cultural Association. In this context, meetings on cinema made by young people will be organised annually, the first of which will be held in Nîmes in July 2005 and the second in Serpa in 2006.

Paula Gaitán’s work brings together a huge variety of styles and formats, from literary adaptations to music videos. Short and feature films include Uaká (1987), awarded at the 21st Brasília Festival of Brazilian Cinema (Special Jury Prize, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Sound), Sutis Interferências (2016), shown at FID Marseille, about the relationship between image and sound based on the work of musician Arto Lindsay, and more recently É Rocha and Rio, Negro Leo (2002), a manifesto film with musician, composer and sociologist Leonardo Campelo Gonçalves, which had its world premiere at the 70th Berlinale.

Pedro Pinho was born in May 1977. He studied cinema at ESTC in Lisbon and at ENSLL in Paris between 1999 and 2003. He attended film directing and screenwriting courses at the London Film School and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2005 and 2006. He made two short films in an academic context, Perto (2004) and No Início (2005). In 2008, she completed Bab Sebta – a documentary co-directed with Frederico Lobo about the waiting times of migrants in the border towns of southern Europe – which was awarded prizes at FID Marseille 2008, Doc Lisboa 2008 and Forumdoc BH 2009. In 2009, he founded the production company Terratreme with Leonor Noivo, Luisa Homem, Tiago Hespanha, João Matos and Susana Nobre, where he has collaborated as producer, screenwriter and director of photography on films such as Linha Vermelha by José Filipe Costa, Lacrau by João Vladimiro and A Fábrica De Nada by Jorge Silva Melo. Since 2010, he has been working on the film As Cidades e as Trocas, co-directed with Luisa Homem, about the economic flows and landscape transformations caused by the tourism industry. In 2013, his first medium-length fiction film, An End of the World, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and has since been shown at various international festivals, with its premiere scheduled for October 2013.

Peter Nestler
He was born in 1937 in Freiburg, in the Black Forest. After making a series of short documentaries in Germany, focusing on issues of work and the transformation of the social and rural space as a result of industrialisation, Nestler emigrated to Sweden in 1965, after making Von Griechenland, a powerful political film that earned him the accusation of ‘communist propaganda’. In this first period lies an essential cinematographic work, as vast as it is unknown, with more than 50 documentaries made to date, many of them for television. Among the many voices that inhabit Nestler's cinema, it is his own voice that, in addition to commentary and description, expresses the weight of the things filmed: the gestures of work and ordinary life, the rhythms of everyday life, places in the world, human ages. From the objective description of the transformation of the rural world by industry, to the presentation of the historical relevance of political resistance, the cultural portrait of a people, or the restitution of the grace and lucidity of the language of childhood, the programme presented in Serpa is a portrait of Nestler's work, covering in three blocks various territories and periods of his work, from the earliest to the most recent films. Nestler is probably one of the filmmakers who best explored the complex relationship between sound and image, giving words, text, the use of voice and music paramount importance. His friend Jean-Marie Straub wrote, ‘I increasingly believe that Nestler was the most important filmmaker in Germany after the war’, quoting a phrase from Bertold Brecht about his films: ‘To exhume the truth buried in the rubble of evidence, to bring together the singular and the general, to fix the particular in the great process, this is the art of the realists.’

Pierre Creton
Born in 1966, he lives and works in Vattetot-sur-Mer (Seine Maritime), France. After studying Fine Arts in Le Havre, Pierre Creton decided to settle in Normandy, in the Caux region, where he had grown up and which became the territory explored and travelled in his films. After Le Vicinal, his first short film in 16mm, mini-DV became the appropriate tool for his work and the only medium for his films. It was between 1998 and 1999 that the filmmaker's form and concerns took shape: between documentary and intimate essay, he made three short films, each based on a relationship, friendship or work. It was while working in the dairy control weighing sector that Creton had the idea for his first feature, Secteur 545 (2004): a hybrid film, simultaneously a documentary about cattle farming in the Caux region and an intimate fi ction of Creton's relationship with his boss. In 2006, he made Paysage Imposé, a documentary about the agricultural high school in Yvetot, which became the first part of a trilogy about the agricultural world. She is currently working on her third film, dedicated to an old people's home. Alongside this work on and in the Caux region, Creton made a short fiction film, Le Voyage à Vazelay (2006), a pilgrimage to the tomb of Georges Bataille, one of the authors who feed his work. The meeting with Vincent Barré, a travelling writer, sculptor and artist, gave rise to two other co-directed films: Détour and L'Arc d'Iris are two travel films, the first in the Shetland Islands and the second in the Indian Himalayas. Recently, Pierre Creton took part in the shooting and editing of Mètis, a film by Vincent Barré about his work as a sculptor. Friendship, work, the becoming of the peasant world and the relationship with landscapes: it is based on these issues that Pierre Creton's films stretch the boundaries of documentary, straddling the lines between fiction and the intimate.

Rithy Pahn is a Cambodian film director whose work focuses on the consequences of the autocratic and totalitarian Khmer Rouge regime, under which the Cambodian people witnessed genocide, famine, misery and exhaustion between 1975 and 1979. Pahn fled to Thailand in 1979, escaping the tragic end that befell his family. He later fled to Paris, where he discovered cinema.

Robert Fenz (1969, Ann Arbor, Michigan) is one of the most singular and committed filmmakers breathing new life to avant-garde film traditions today. Fenz’s films, mostly shot in black and white 16mm, have a rare energy and restless beauty that recalls both the jazz-inspired imagery of New York School photographers such as Roy DeCarava, but also the landscape films of one of Fenz’s former teachers, Peter Hutton, and the documentary work of Johan van der Keuken and Chantal Akerman, some of whose recent film works have actually been shot by Fenz himself. His films are personal and poetic portraits of people and places he encountered during his many travels in countries such as in Cuba, Mexico, Brazil and India. He passed away in 2020.

He studied German language and literature, philosophy and history in Munich and Bonn in 1960. After a trip to Paris, he began writing his first film reviews for the Bonner Generalanzeiger newspaper in 1962. He moved to Munich, where he began writing articles for the periodicals Filmkritik and Film, as well as for the Süddeutscher Zeitung.In 1964, he collaborated with Max Zihlmann and Klaus Lemke on his first short film, and became managing director of the Munich Film Critics' Club in 1965.He worked as a loan consultant for the construction company Neue Heimstatt and interrupted his dissertation on Albert Paris Gütersloh's novel Sonne und Mond to make his first feature film; he moved to Berlin in 1973, where he wrote film reviews for the newspaper Der Tagesspiegel and the magazine Hobo. He also worked for the Freunde der deutschen Kinemathek. He founded his own production company, Moana Film, in 1977. In 1981, he was awarded the Guild Prize in the category of second best German film for Berlin Chamissoplatz, and in 1989 the International Critics' Best Film Award in Montreal for The Philosopher. In 1991, he founded his own distribution company, Prometheus.

Sirah Foighel Brutmann & Eitan Efrat, both born in 1983 in Tel Aviv, live in Brussels and have been working together for several years. Brutmann studied Choreography and Performance at PARTS (Performing Arts Research and Training Studios) in Brussels and Efrat trained at the VAV - moving image department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Together they founded the production company Til Far, which produces video art and dance projects, and are part of the artist-run collective Messidor, together with Pieter Geenen and Meggy Rustamova. Their audiovisual practice focuses on the performative aspects of the moving image. They work on the spatial and durational potential of reading images - both moving and still - exploring the relationship between spectatorship and history, and the temporality of narrative and memory. Their work has been shown at film festivals such as IDFA, IFF Rotterdam, Courtisane, New Horizons and ARTE/WDR. Stephanie Spray and Pacho Velez
Stephanie Spray is a filmmaker, sound designer and anthropologist whose work explores the confluence of social aesthetics and art in everyday life. She is currently a PhD candidate and associate professor at the Sensory Ethnography Lab and a fellow at the Harvard Film Study Centre. In 1999, she began studying music, religion and languages in Nepal and has since spent a lot of time practising the art of ‘wandering’ (dhulna jāne) with a caste of itinerant musicians called Gandharba. He has made several films with this community, including Kāle and Kāle (2007), Monsoon-Reflections (2008), Untitled (bed) (2009), As Long as There's Breath (2010) and Untitled (2010).
Pacho Velez gets a bit bored with sober films. He prefers the intoxicated - poor aesthetic choices, intemperate political stances and surprising formal structures. In 2010, he completed his master's degree at CalArts. He now works and teaches between New York and Boston. Pacho is a fellow at the Harvard Film Study Centre and an affiliate of the Sensory Ethnography Lab. His new film, Manakamana (co-directed with Stephanie Spray, produced by Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel) premiered this summer and won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. Her previous works, in film and theatre, have been performed all over the world.

Susana de Sousa Dias
Susana de Sousa Dias is a filmmaker and artist from Portugal. Her films and installations explore the dialectics of history and memory, questioning established regimes of visibility with a focus on the archive. Using still photographs and archival imagery, her first works (2000-2017) deal with the memory of the dictatorship in Portugal. Through testimonies from political prisoners, and resulting from extensive research in the national archives, her work played an important role in the public denunciation of the violent repression and torture used by the regime. More recently, she directed Fordlandia Malaise, in 2019, and co-directed Viagem ao Sol, with Ansgar Schaefer, in 2021. She often collaborates with her brother António de Sousa Dias, composer and artist, in the creation of the soundtrack for her films. Her work has received numerous awards and has been presented worldwide.
In 2012, she created a female collective that directed Doclisboa for two editions, establishing new sections such as Cinema of Urgency and Passages (Documentary & Contemporary Art). She is a co-founder of the production company Kintop. She holds a PhD in Fine Arts-Video, and teaches at the Fine Arts Faculty of the University of Lisbon.

Born in Lisbon in 1974. In 1998 she finished her degree in Communication Sciences at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Since then she has made films that have been shown at festivals such as Cannes, Berlinale, Rotterdam, BFI London Film Festival, Festival d’Angers, Viennale, Vila do Conde, Rio de Janeiro, Zinebi, among others. In 2006 she founded the production company Terratreme (formerly Raiva), where she has been executive producer on various projects.

Porto, 1978. He graduated in Cine-Video from ESAP, took part in the Varan workshops at the Gulbenkian Program for Creativity and Artistic Creation, attended the Jean Rouch Seminar “Anthropologie et Cinema” at the Cinemateca Francesa and completed his master’s degree in documentary cinema at ESMAE-IPP.
His main activity is documentary filmmaking, and she has made intervention and political reflection films, as well as autobiographical and experimental works. He has also made several video installations.

Trevor Mathison & Gary Stewart
Trevor Mathison is an artist, composer, sound designer, and recordist. His sonic practice – centered on creating fractured, haunting aural landscapes and integrating existing music – has featured in over thirty award-winning films and installations. Trevor was a founding member of the cine-cultural artist collective The Black Audio Film Collective (1982 -1998), where his sonic designs defined and situated the Collective’s audiovisual works, including Signs of Empire (1983), Handsworth Songs (1986) and The Last Angel of History (1996). He has continued to work with some of his former collaborators from BAFC (John Akomfrah, Lina Gopaul and David Lawson) creating sound design for numerous documentaries and installations. With Anna Piva and Edward George, he formed the projects “Flow Motion” and “Hallucinator”, whose mutant techno dub featured on the leading record label Chain Reaction. In recent years Trevor has produced a series of artworks and album releases as part of the ongoing and iterative project From Signal to Decay.
Gary Stewart is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of sound, moving image and computational creativity. His work examines social and political issues of identity, culture, and technology. Through the application of innovative technologies and practices, he is part of a global network of collaborators who are advocates for equality, climate justice and better health through the arts especially those from marginalised communities. Operating through a range of theoretical, fictional, and artistic frames, his work traverses media art, experimental music, and research. Under the moniker of Bantu, Gary sets out to explore and bring fresh new perspectives and in particular to “Black Noise”. Batu’s recent release Instability (2024) draws upon both personal experience and collective trauma – that of a diaspora subjected to the rigours of a prolonged “hostile environment”.
As Dubmorphology, Trevor Mathison and Gary Stewart create installations and performances that incorporate elements of dub and musique concrète which functions as a binding agent for disparate visual material that is bound together by what might be dubbed “post-soul noise”.

Trinh T. Minh-ha
Trinh T. Minh-ha is a writer, theorist, composer and filmmaker whose practice is mainly positioned within the fields of feminist and postcolonial studies. Born in Hanoi, she emigrated to the US during the Vietnam War, where she studied music composition, ethnomusicology and French literature. While teaching in Dakar, Senegal, she created her first film, Reassemblage (1982), which documents the lives of women in rural Senegal in a manner that she famously described as “speaking nearby” rather than “speaking about” the subjects she portrays. She has consistently challenged the traditional documentary format and has been deconstructing normative ways of looking at and listening to different cultures, whilst being dedicated to questioning totalizing systems of knowledge and categories of identity. She considers each work to exist as a “boundary event,” eluding labels such as documentary, fiction or experimental film, instead positioning her work between these designations. Alongside audiovisual works, she has published numerous essays and books on cinema, cultural politics, feminism and the arts. She is Professor of Rhetoric and of Gender & Women’s Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

Victor Erice
Born in the Basque Country in 1940, Víctor Erice is one of Europe’s most outstanding filmmakers. His first film, The Spirit of the Beehive (1973) was a huge success with international critics and audiences and is considered one of the best Spanish films ever made. This was followed by The South (1983), presented in the Official Selection at Cannes, and The Quince Sun (1992), made in collaboration with the artist Antonio Lopez, which won the Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize at Cannes. Over the last 30 years, Erice has dedicated himself to a variety of collective projects, short films and documentaries. Cerrar los Ojos is his first feature-length fiction film in thirty years.

He was born in Moscow in 1969 and arrived in Paris in 1975 with his brother Pierre, his mother (Russian) and father (French). In his documentaries, the biographical form allows access to history in its intimate relationship with the present. From the actuality of the voice, in the form of evocation or enquiry, the events of the century intersect with the singular memory: in Nissim dit Max, through the portrait of the father, Moscow correspondent for the French newspaper L'Humanité, made with his brother, the director Pierre Léon; or through the testimonies of the political biography of a Bengali revolutionary, between Mexico, Russia, Germany and India, in Le Brahmane du Komintern. Vladimir Léon is currently preparing a project based on the writings of Alexis de Tocqueville on democracy in America. Léon's films objectively question the value of the filmed interview, and of testimony and commentary on the image, subtly operating the registers of orality and the fixation of memory, between shifts in meaning and attention to the sensitive balance of affective and temporal distances between the present and the past.

Yan Yu, also born in China in 1971. He worked as a journalist and cameraman in documentaries and advertising until 1998. In 2001 he founded Fan & Yu Documentary Studio in Chongqing with Li Yifan.
