Deuses de Pedra, by Ivan Castiñeiras Gallego

Shot on film on Portugal’s northern border, Deuses de Pedra follows the lives of Mariana and her family in a small village over a period of 15 years. This family portrait is interwoven with the stories and legends that inhabit this rural area, marked by emigration. Between collective memory and mythology, intimate narratives and profound reflections on rural life today are woven together. At the age of 17, Mariana will have to decide whether to leave the land where she grew up.  

A work-in-progress was presented at Doc’s Kingdom 2015, in Arcos de Valdevez (Minho), whilst still in production. The final version of the film had its world premiere in Rotterdam (IFFR) in 2025 and has won several awards in Portugal and Spain. 

Ivan Castiñeiras Gallego  (Ourense, 1980) is a Galician filmmaker and director of photography. He studied in France (Le Fresnoy), Portugal (ESTC) and Galicia (University of Santiago de Compostela). His work inhabits borderline spaces, where characters on the fringes of the law blur imaginary lines: whether those dividing countries, those separating fiction from documentary, or those separating the imagination from lived experience.  

The screening will be presented by the filmmaker and the co-directors of Doc’s Kingdom, Catarina Boieiro and Stefanie Baumann.
