Good Valley Stories, by José Luis Guerín
(2025 | Spain, France | M/12 | 2h02 | Spanish with PT subtitles)
Friday May 15, 9.30pm — Cineteatro Camacho Costa, Odemira
A dense and tender portrait of a peripheral neighbourhood, in the suburbs of Barcelona, and of its inhabitants who have been settling there from the post-war period until today, through different migratory waves. In this humble area, despised by the local powers yet extremely appreciated by its inhabitants, Good Valley Stories weaves a serene and empathetic look at the current world.
José Luis Guerín was born in Barcelona in 1960. Today he is recognized as one of the most respected authors of Spanish cinema. He began his career with experimental short films during his youth, and directed his first feature film in 1984. His work has been testing, with great sensitivity, the boundaries between fiction and documentary. In 2001, he completed En Construcción, perhaps his most acclaimed project (presented at Doc’s Kingdom 2003) – a filmic immersion in the El Raval neighbourhood, in Barcelona, during its process of urban restructuring. In 2025, Guerín received the Special Jury Prize at the San Sebastián Film Festival with Good Valley Stories.
The session will be presented by Catarina Boieiro and Stefanie Braunmann, co-directors of Doc’s Kingdom.
