Doc’s Kingdom, Robert Kramer [cópia restaurada inédita]
(1987, PT/FR, 93 min., English and Portuguese, with Portuguese subtitles)
Marking the 25th anniversary of Doc’s Kingdom — International Documentary Film Seminar, Cinemateca Portuguesa presents for the first time the restored copy of Robert Kramer’s Doc’s Kingdom.
A prelude to Robert Kramer’s Route One/USA, and produced by Paulo Branco on the condition that it would be filmed in Portugal, Doc’s Kingdom follows the story of an American doctor, expatriated in Lisbon, and his difficult reunion with his son. Living in isolation, surrounded by memories, encounters, and dialogues that cross both geographical and political borders. Blending fiction, autobiographical reflection, and historical commentary, the film stands as a singular portrait of disillusionment and the persistence of utopia.
Screening introduced by José Manuel Costa, one of the founders of the seminar, whose first edition took place in Serpa in 2000. Twenty-five years later, we revisit the origins of this annual gathering with the film that closed its first edition.
